Opportunity description

The Royal Society offers the Royal Society Africa Prize and Rising Star Africa Prize for all scientists and science enthusiasts from North Africa. The Royal Society has a broad range of medals including the Premier Awards, subject specific awards and medals celebrating the communication and promotion of science.


Benefits

  • The Royal Society Africa Prize
  • The Prize will make a grant of £15,000, including VAT where applicable, to the Recipient for a research project and £2,000 as a personal prize for the Recipient.
  • The Rising Star Africa Prize
  • The Prize will make a grant of £14,000, including VAT where applicable, to the Recipient for a research project and £1,000 as a personal prize for the Recipient.


Eligibility criteria


  • Grants are made to be spent on the research project which has the potential to continue after the 12 months of the Grant.
  • The Grant is designed to promote capacity building within Africa.
  • The Recipient of the Prize may not use the funds to support their own salary/personal remuneration or as a salary for research assistants.

Prizes Purposes and Conditions:-

  • The Royal Society Africa Prize
  • The Royal Society Africa Prize will be made to an individual for an outstanding, innovative contribution to the sciences which contributes significantly to capacity building in Africa.
  • The Prize is intended for researchers at an early stage of their research career with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize.
  • The research must be based in Africa.
  • The project and nominee should be linked with an African centre of excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre.
  • Normally the Prize is given to an individual who has not yet reached full Professorship status.
  • The recipient of the Prize is required to submit a report after 6 months and again after 12 months detailing the progress of their research, the progress of their project and the expenditure of the Grant.
  • The Rising Star Africa Prize
  • The Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize will be made to an early career research scientist who is making an innovative contribution to the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences.
  • The prize was established to encourage excellence in science and education in Africa.
  • The Prize is intended for researchers at an early stage of their research career (<8 years post PhD) with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize.
  • The research must be based in Africa.
  • The project and nominee should be linked with an African centre of excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre.
  • The recipient of the Prize is required to submit a report after 6 months and again after 12 months detailing the progress of their research, the progress of their project and the expenditure of the Grant.
