Opportunity description

Caterpillar has launched its annual competition for the best story. This annual award is given to the best story of no more than 1,500 words for children aged 7–11. And this year, they're very happy to announce the second prize of a week’s retreat at the marvelous Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Co. Monaghan, Ireland. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. The Prize is open to anyone over 16.
  2. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been published, self-published, published online or broadcast.    
  3. You can enter as many stories as you like.
  4. Story words mustn't exceed 1500 word
  5. The name of the author must not appear on the same page as the story.
  6. All entries must be in English.
  7. Each entry must be in a new sheet.
  8. No corrections can be made after receipt, or fees refunded.
  9. Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author, but The Caterpillar will have the unrestricted right to publish the winning stories in the winter 2019 issue of The Caterpillar and any relevant promotional material.
  10. The judge's decision is final and no individual correspondence can be entered into. 
  11. If you require acknowledgment of receipt of your entry: enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked 'ACKNOWLEDGEMENT'  (include international reply coupon if entering from overseas) in case of postal entry. In case of online entries, they are confirmed by the email receipt of your payment to PayPal.

Note: Entries will not be returned, so make sure you keep a copy.

Fund and Benefits:

  • Entry fee is €12 per story.
  • Online payment should be made to enquiries@thecaterpillarmagazine.com by PayPal.
  • In case of Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to ‘The Moth Magazine Ltd.’, with the sender's name and address on the back.
  • Postal orders can only be accepted from Ireland and the UK. We will accept dollar and sterling cheques. 
  • Postal entries can also be paid in cash (either in US dollars, Sterling or Euros at the current exchange rate).

Prizes:

  1. First prize: 1000 euro.
  2.  second prize, the winner will win a week-long stay at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Co. Monaghan in Ireland.

Important Dates:

  • Closing date for receipt of entries is 30 September 2019.
  • All entrants to the competition ( including those who have not been successful ) will be notified by email the result of the competition by 14 November 2019.
  •  The winners will be announced in December with the publication of the winter issue of The Caterpillar.  

About Caterpillar:

The Caterpillar is a magazine of poems, stories, and art, created by grown-ups for children. It is the younger sibling of The Moth, an art & literature magazine for grown-ups. The Caterpillar is for kids between the ages of 7 and 11 years old and appears four times a year ‒ in March, June, September, and December. The Caterpillar includes some great writing by the likes of Michael Morpurgo and Mark Lowery.
