Opportunity description

The fifth edition of Tallinn Architecture Biennale has announced an open call for its Vision Competition. TAB 2019, which will take place September 11 to November 3, is dedicated to the theme "Beauty Matters: the Resurgence of Beauty" and it is curated the London-based architect and researcher Dr. Yael Reisner. The winning project codes will be announced by the end of January 2019. Winning authors will be announced in September 2019 during the award ceremony at TAB 2019.

Competition Theme:

Under the theme of 'New Habitats, New Beauties,' this year's competition focuses on the East side of Kopli, part of Kalamaja, an urban area in the North of Tallinn. The curatorial team asks that the proposals escape the bland globalization of standard developer architecture and find new concepts in keeping with the alternative lifestyles of Kalamaja's inhabitants. The task is to create a neighborhood of shared and private habitats to live and work in. Indoor and outdoor places for people to learn, play and grow across the ages.

Prizes:

Winners in this competition will receive the following:

  • First prize: €4000.
  • Second prize: €2000.
  • Third prize: €1000
  • Five honorable mentions.
  • All project entries will be will be exhibited as part of TAB 2019.

Requirements:

  1. The competition language is English.
  2. Two A1 boards mounted on 5mm foam board.
  3. Three marketing/presentation images at a resolution of 4266 × 3200px (36 × 27 cm in 300 dpi) in a lossless format.
  4. 300-word summary text explaining the proposals.

Rules and Conditions:

  1. The competition is anonymous.
  2. It is an open call one-stage competition, and all architects and students of architecture, are welcome to participate. 
  3. Jury members and their family, relatives and business partners are not eligible to participate.
  4. Entries must be identified by a project code or motto only, which should be at least 8 alphanumeric characters long and which must not infer the name of the project author(s).
  5. The form of submission is via both digital upload and post in a closed envelope.
