Opportunity description

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge announces the launch of its annual competition 2021. Students aged between 13 and 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original videos (3 minutes in length maximum) that explains a big scientific idea in fundamental physics, life sciences or mathematics. 

The submissions are judged on the student’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways. 


Benefits

The winner will receive the following:

  1. $250,000 post-secondary scholarship.
  2. $50,000 prize for the winner's teacher.
  3. $100,000 Breakthrough Science Lab, for the renovation or addition of a science lab at winners school

Note: winner and his parent or guardian will be awarded a trip to receive their award at the live televised ceremony. (date to be announced later).


Eligibility criteria

Video submission

  • Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction.
  •  Your video submission must be 3 minutes or under according to the clock on YouTube. Your video should also not be marked as private as it will not be able to be viewed and judged in the Competition. Any video over 3 minutes or marked as private may be disqualified from the Competition in the sole discretion of the Competition Sponsor.
  • Limit to one entry per person during the Competition Period.
  • The videos will be judged according to the following criteria:
  • Engagement.
  • Illumination.
  • Creativity.
  • Difficulty.

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for students to inspire creative thinking about science. The Breakthrough Prize was created to honor important advancements in the categories of Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences and Mathematics. The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The Breakthrough Prize aims to celebrate the best scientific work and inspire the next generation of scientists.
