Opportunity description

Climate Tracker has announced a Youth Writing and Journalism Competition for 2019, with the theme “Climate” as its first official campaign for high school students. Around the world, the climate kids are rallying for Earth's future. Aside from striking and protesting, youth should also tell the stories of their lived experiences from all corners of the globe.

Join the contest by writing about one of the topics below:

  1. The environment you live in.
  2. How climate has impacted you & your community.
  3. Effects of your country’s environmental policies.
  4. The youth climate movement in your area.
  5. What you want to tell those making decisions.
  6. Climate change affects young people’s lives in many different ways. There is no one climate story.

Eligibility:

Students from 14 to 20 years old, or students currently enrolled in a high school program or the equivalent thereof.

Awards:

The top 03 writers will be awarded a month-long mentorship with Climate Tracker and recognized as possibly the youngest-ever online fellows. Top 10 articles will be republished on the webpage. For students in New York, neighboring states and students otherwise able to travel to NYC from Sept 20th-22nd: In addition to the prizes above, if you fall under this category, you are eligible to join Climate Tracker in covering the Global Strikes alongside the 8 UN Climate Action Summit Fellows from all over the world. The team will be selecting 5 of the most qualified high school students to do the following:

  1. September 20 - Report on the Youth Strikes around UN Headquarters in NYC.
  2. September 21 - Write 2 articles with materials collected, receive feedback from Climate Tracker and get published on our news site.
  3. September 22 - Attend training on UN Climate Negotiations and Climate Journalism conducted by Climate Tracker and the Stanley Foundation.

In addition to that, you will:

  1. Be among the first high school students worldwide to get published in mainstream media.

  3. With permission from the original publishers, you will be re-published, cited and if needed, translated the top 10 articles submitted
  4. Climate Tracker will be providing feedback on all articles submitted, and a month-long mentorship to top 3 writers while they work on 2 additional stories.
