Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunity in Ethiopia to work as an associate political affairs officer which will expected to start on 19/06/2023 for about 12 months with the possibility of an extension. The Associate Political Affairs Officer will be based in the Office of the Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa (OSE-Horn of Africa) which aims to support and build consensus towards a prosperous, stable, and peaceful region.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Conduct research on issues pertaining to peace and security as well as political developments in assigned countries in the Horn of Africa Region.
  • Prepare a range of internal reports and briefing papers, including but not limited to situation reports, political profiles, and talking points for the Special Envoy and other senior staff.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships, which support the work of the Office, including representatives of international organizations and other relevant partners.
  • Monitor information and news sources for the production of daily news clippings and media reports.
  • Follow up on political and security developments in assigned countries in the Horn region.
  • Undertake other relevant tasks and assignments as requested.
  • Maintain regular contact with partners in countries assigned by the supervisor.
  • Strengthened partnership and regular interaction and support to IGAD/AU.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in International Relations, Political Science, or related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience in political affairs, government, diplomacy, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, or international development.
  • Prior experience in political analysis and reporting is essential.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet.
  • Familiarity with database management.
  • Teamwork skills, respect for diversity and communication skills.
  • Planning and organizing skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • French, Level: Working knowledge.
  • Proven ability or interest to work with government officials or International, Regional, or Sub-Regional organizations is an asset.

Please note: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment and be aged 27 - 80.
