The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) is an independent, non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting basic research in the biomedical field. Since its establishment, BIF has provided a platform to support outstanding young scientists through scholarships, fostering international scientific collaboration, and building a broad network of researchers and alumni.
This PhD fellowship is awarded to emerging scientific talents who aim to conduct ambitious experimental research in basic biomedical sciences within leading laboratories worldwide. The fellowship duration initially covers two years, with the possibility of an extension for up to an additional 1.5 years, depending on scientific evaluation and research progress.
Application Deadlines
The online application portal opens about one month prior to each deadline.
The fixed annual deadlines are: 1 February, 1 June, 1 October.

Eligibility criteria
The project must be in the field of experimental research in basic biomedical sciences, carried out in an outstanding laboratory.
Open to European citizens (inside or outside Europe) and to non-Europeans who are pursuing their PhD in Europe.
Applicants must not have started their PhD project more than six months prior to the application deadline.
No more than eight years may have passed since obtaining the applicant’s first university degree (e.g., BSc or equivalent).
If a Master’s degree has not yet been obtained by the deadline, it may be submitted within four months after the deadline.
