Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunity in Jordanand announces its need for a communications officer, for 12 months during the period of 10/07/2023 to 10/07/2024.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Lead the development and implementation of communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans, with a specific focus on media.
    • Conduct communication needs assessments for the UN Women Country Office (CO), including projects, programs, and corporate change initiatives.
    • Monitor and analyze print and social media and prepare reports.
    • Manage in-country UN Women/ UN system corporate and local campaigns and special events.
  • Lead the development and dissemination of advocacy materials in the country.
    • Develop and produce communication and advocacy instruments and materials, including briefing materials, press releases, and articles and coordinate its dissemination through effective channels.
    • Develop brochures, factsheets, and stories from the field to inform media and the general public at the country and regional level.
    • Follow guidelines from and report to HQ.
  • Manage media relations for the Country Office.
    • Lead relationship-building with the press in the country.
    • Respond timely and clearly to media inquiries and to a variety of inquiries and information requests.
    • Organize roundtable discussions, press conferences, and briefing sessions with the press.
    • Finalize talking points.
  • Build and maintain partnerships and maintain relations with donors.
    • Identify and develop new communication partnerships and alliances to enhance visibility.
    • Guide and collaborate closely with communication colleagues in other offices to ensure consistency with corporate policies, messaging, and initiatives.
  • Oversee the CO’s web/ online presence.
    • Oversee and maintain websites, including developing design and content.
    • Coordinate COs’ web-presence in line with corporate web policy.
  • Facilitate knowledge-building and sharing.
    • Provide training and workshops on communication and advocacy as appropriate.
    • Perform any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in media and communication, journalism, international relations, and/or related areas.
  • 5 years of experience in at the national or international level in communications, public relations, or advocacy, including in media relations.
  • Experience in the use of social media.
  • Strong knowledge of managing web-based knowledge management systems.
  • Strong understanding of production, graphic design, and photography standards.
  • Strong oral and written communication and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment, which is an asset.
  • Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement.
  • Teamwork and respect for diversity.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and ability to adapt to changes in work environment.
  • Effective organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities and to plan, ability to work under pressure, and to handle multiple concurrent projects/activities.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.

Please note: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment and be aged 27 - 80.
