Africa Human Rights Film Festival (AHRFF) is now available for all filmmakers all over the world to participate with their films and win valuable awards. AHRFF is a registered non-profit organization based in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose mission is to use film to generate robust debate, empower African citizens, raise awareness, and promote respect for human rights across Africa.

Festival Activities:-

  • The Festival is hosted annually to raise awareness and respect of human rights in rural and urban marginalized communities.
  • The festival seeks to establish a virtual library of human rights films accessible to the rural and urban communities, civil society and schools.
  • Through partnerships, the festival aims to host screenings online and on-site in various African townships and rural areas raising awareness on human rights issues affecting them.
  • The festival endeavours to carry out multimedia training workshops targeting young people in marginalized rural and urban communities as well as human rights defenders and journalists on the African continent.
  • The festival uses social and traditional media to create an awareness of human and advocate for their respect.

Benefits

  • Three prizes will be given for the following categories:
  • Best feature-length documentary film.
  • Best social Impact documentary film.
  • Best short documentary film.
  • At the moment, the festival does not pay for airfare, transportation, lodging, meals, parking, etc. These are the responsibility of selected filmmakers wishing to attend. But if funding allows, the festival may foot travel and accommodation for some of the participants.

Eligibility criteria

  • Foreign language work must be dubbed or subtitled in English.
  • Submission is free. 
  • The festival has no film premiere requirements or date of completion requirements.
  • Selected films will be announced on or around August 7. All entrants will be notified by email. 
  • The festival does not pay rental/screening fees for submitted/selected work. 
  • For selected films, the exhibition format is Blu-Ray (PAL) or DVD (PAL).
