Fully Funded Literary Residency in Switzerland 2027 for Writers and Translators

The Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature has opened applications for its 2027 Literary Residency Program in the village of Montricher, Switzerland. The program provides a peaceful and inspiring environment for writers, translators, and other creators whose projects place literature and writing at their core.

The residency welcomes writing projects in all genres and languages, with priority given to literary writers and translators. Applications may be submitted individually or as a collaborative project involving two participants, such as a writer and a translator, two writers, or a writer collaborating with a creative professional from another discipline. Each year, the foundation selects dozens of writers from around the world—from emerging to established authors—to develop their projects while staying in its independent residency cabins.

Residencies range from two weeks to three months, and applicants are expected to request a duration that reflects the scope of their project. Depending on availability, the foundation may offer a different residency length.

Eligible projects include:

• Novels.
• Short stories.
• Poetry.
• Plays and dramatic writing.
• Children's and young adult literature.
• Creative nonfiction.
• Nature writing.
• Literary translation.
• Essays and hybrid literary works.
• Collaborative projects combining literature with other creative disciplines.

• Round-trip travel expenses from the selected resident’s home address to the foundation in Switzerland.
• A weekly allowance of CHF 400.
• Private accommodation in one of the foundation’s independent cabins.
• Separate accommodation for each participant when a two-person collaborative project is selected.
• Breakfast and lunch provided for residents.
• Access to electric bicycles.
• Free daytime access to the foundation’s library.
• Free participation in cultural activities and events organized by the foundation.
• Dedicated time and space to begin, develop, or complete a literary project.
• A peaceful residency setting overlooking Lake Geneva and the Alps or the forests of the Jura Mountains.

Applicants must:

1. Be actively involved in a writing or literary creative project.
2. Ensure that writing is at the core of the proposed project.
3. Submit only one application during the annual application cycle.
4. Not have previously received a residency from the Jan Michalski Foundation.
5. Submit a project that demonstrates clear literary quality.
6. Clearly explain what they intend to accomplish during the residency.
7. Submit the application in either English or French.

The application form must include:

1. Personal and contact information.
2. Nationality and country of residence.
3. Languages spoken and working languages.
4. A third-person biography of no more than 500 characters.
5. Educational background, limited to 1,500 characters.
6. A list of publications, limited to 1,500 characters.
7. Details of any awards received.
8. Professional memberships, if applicable.
9. The project title.
10. A project summary of no more than 500 characters.
11. A detailed project description of no more than 4,000 characters.
12. An explanation of how the applicant would benefit from the residency and what they expect to accomplish, limited to 4,000 characters.
13. The preferred duration and season of the residency.
14. Information on whether a visa is required to enter Switzerland.
15. Details of any special needs during the residency.
