Opportunity description

Mori Contemporary Art Foundation (MoriCAF) in Japan offers the Curator Residency Program 2027, a funded international residency program designed for curators based outside Japan who are interested in contemporary Japanese art.

The program allows participants to stay in Japan for a period ranging from one to three months, conduct field research, and connect with artists, researchers, museums, galleries, festivals, and independent art spaces across Japan.

It aims to support cultural and professional exchange, build new international networks, and encourage the development of future exhibitions, research, and projects related to contemporary Japanese art.

Benefits

Selected participants receive:

  • Round-trip international economy-class airfare from the airport nearest to the applicant to either Narita or Haneda Airport.
  • Free accommodation in a furnished apartment at MORI LIVING in Tokyo.

  • Breakfast during the residency.
  • Research project support of up to JPY 200,000.
  • The project funding may be used to cover domestic transportation, research-related accommodation, and other relevant expenses.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants are eligible if they:

  • Are based outside Japan.
  • Have at least 5 years of curatorial experience in the field of contemporary art.
  • Are proficient in English or Japanese.
  • Are able to live and work independently during the residency period.
  • Are willing to stay in the accommodation provided by MoriCAF for the entire duration of the program.
  • Are able to obtain appropriate health and travel insurance before departure.
  • Are willing to participate in media and promotional activities related to the program.
  • Do not engage in commercial activities during the residency.
  • Are available to stay for a minimum of one month and a maximum of 90 days.
