The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Amsterdam is accepting applications for the Safe Haven Fellowship for the first semester of the 2027–2028 academic year. This five-month fellowship is designed for researchers, writers, journalists, and artists who are unable to continue their work safely because of war, conflict, or restrictions and threats imposed by governmental or non-governmental actors. The fellowship allows selected participants to relocate temporarily to Amsterdam and continue their research or creative projects in a safe academic environment.
The programme offers up to three fellowships per academic semester and targets applicants with a strong professional or research track record whose academic, literary, journalistic, or artistic work has been directly affected by war, conflict, or restrictions on academic and professional freedom.

Eligibility criteria
For Academic Researchers
Applicants must:
- Hold a PhD degree.
- Have at least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.
- Have a clear record of research or academic output.
- Submit an individual research project that can be completed during the fellowship period.
For Writers, Journalists, and Artists
Applicants must:
- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a university or university of applied sciences.
- Have at least 7 years of professional experience in their field.
- Have a clear professional track record in writing, journalism, the arts, or creative research.
Language Requirements
- Demonstrate English proficiency at an academic level equivalent to C1.
- All application documents must be submitted in English.
