Opportunity description
The Lewis Center at the Princeton University in the US is offering the Hodder Fellowship to artists and writers of exceptional promise to pursue independent projects at Princeton University during the 2022-2023 academic year.
Benefits
Hodder Fellows spend an academic year at Princeton, but no formal teaching is involved. An $86,000 stipend is provided for this 10-month appointment as a Visiting Fellow. Fellows are additionally funded $5,000 (per academic year) for research expenses. Fellowships are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree.
Eligibility criteria
- Writers and non-literary artists of exceptional promise who wish to pursue independent projects at Princeton University during the academic year.
- Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers, translators, or other kinds of artists or humanists who have “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts”; they are selected more “for promise than for performance.” Given the strength of the applicant pool, most successful Fellows have published the first book or have similar achievements in their own fields; the Hodder is designed to provide Fellows with a year of “studious leisure” to undertake significant new work.
- Advanced degrees preferred, although not required.
- Non-US citizens are welcome to apply.
- This fellowship cannot be used to fund work leading to a Ph.D. or any other advanced degree.
Required Documents:
- Completed electronic application
- Resume/C.V.
- Project proposal of 500 words (This can be uploaded on the application under the Cover Letter link. A cover letter is not needed from applicants.)
- If you are a writer, include: a 3,000-word writing sample of recent work (for poetry – 20 to 30 pages of work)
- If you are a performance artist, include Examples of ten minutes (total) of performance through a link to sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Flicker, etc. (Please note the application will allow you to add one URL link in addition to the link provided for sample work.)
- If you are a visual artist, include up to 20 still images organized into a single PDF file.
- If you are a musician, include 1-2 scores and/or Examples of ten minutes (total) of performance through a link to sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Flicker, etc.
