Opportunity description
The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, has opened applications for the Max Weber Fellowships 2027–2028, one of the leading funded international postdoctoral fellowship programs in the fields of social sciences, humanities, history, law, economics, and political science.
The fellowship is intended for early-career researchers who obtained their PhD within the last five years, and it is open to applicants of all nationalities. The program gives relative priority to researchers who have recently completed their doctorate and have not previously held a postdoctoral fellowship.
Benefits
Selected fellows receive:
- A basic monthly grant of €2,500.
- Funding for 12 or 24 months, depending on the academic department; in exceptional cases, support may extend to 36 months.
- €1,500 per year to cover eligible research expenses, such as conference participation.
- Up to an additional €1,000 to cover job interview expenses for fellows who are on the academic job market.
- Basic health insurance funded by the EUI.
- Reimbursement of travel expenses at the beginning and end of the fellowship, up to a total of €1,200.
- Reimbursement of visa fees up to €250.
- Assistance from the EUI with visa and residence procedures for fellows from outside the European Union.
- The possibility of receiving a family allowance for eligible fellows.
Eligibility criteria
To apply for the Max Weber Fellowship, applicants must:
- Be of any nationality worldwide.
- Have obtained their PhD within the last five years, or have official authorization to defend their dissertation within the required timeframe.
- For the 2027–2028 cycle, applicants must have obtained or submitted their PhD between September 1, 2022 and September 1, 2027.
- Defend their PhD no later than December 31, 2027.
- Have a clear and feasible research project that can be completed during the fellowship period.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in continuing an academic and research career.
- Meet the English language requirements.
