Medialab Matadero, part of Matadero Madrid in Spain, has opened applications for the Situated Research Residencies 2027, a research and creative residency programme supporting experimental and interdisciplinary projects that combine art, design, science, technology, and society.
A total of 3 projects will be selected for a 7-month research residency, from January to July 2027, in Madrid. The programme is aimed at researchers, artists, designers, engineers, programmers, filmmakers, photographers, journalists, activists, and others working on research projects that go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
The residency focuses on projects that use innovative and experimental research methods and encourages learning through practice, prototype development, open knowledge production, community engagement, and the exploration of contemporary social, environmental, and technological challenges.
Benefits
Each selected project receives:
- Financial support of €10,000 before taxes.
- 70% of the funding paid at the beginning of the residency, with the remaining 30% paid after submission and approval of the final report.
- The funding may be used for research, production, documentation, travel, materials, equipment, collaboration with other parties, and other project-related expenses.
- Coverage of one round-trip journey to Madrid for selected residents coming from outside Spain, in accordance with programme rules.
- A dedicated workspace at Matadero Madrid.
- Access to shared facilities, including:
- Digital fabrication laboratory (Fablab).
- Meeting and presentation rooms.
- Black Box studio.
- Audio recording room.
- Editing and technical work facilities.
- Internet access and essential working facilities.
- Ongoing support and follow-up from the Medialab Matadero team throughout the programme.
- Monthly follow-up sessions to help participants develop their projects.
- The opportunity to present the project and its outcomes to the public through events and public sessions.
- Opportunities to connect and collaborate with researchers, artists, communities, and institutions in Madrid and beyond.
