The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg in Germany has opened applications for the FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme 2027/28, a funded research fellowship designed for researchers in the early stages of their careers after completing a PhD.
The fellowship is open to researchers of all nationalities and from a wide range of academic disciplines that can be supported by the University of Freiburg, whether applicants are currently based in Germany or abroad. It aims to provide researchers with dedicated time to focus on their research projects while benefiting from the academic resources, research networks, and scholarly community at the University of Freiburg.
The fellowship lasts between 4 and 10 months and must take place between September 1, 2027 and August 31, 2028. Fellows are required to reside in Freiburg and work full-time at FRIAS throughout the fellowship period.

Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the FRIAS Early Career Fellowship, applicants must:
- Hold a fully completed PhD degree at the time of application.
- Have no more than 8 years of postdoctoral professional experience.
- Periods related to family reasons, medical leave, or non-academic professional work may be excluded from the eight-year calculation in accordance with the programme’s rules.
- Have at least 4 peer-reviewed academic publications published since January 1, 2022.
- Have at least 6 months of study or research experience at an academic institution in a country different from the country where they obtained their first academic degree.
- Submit a research project that can be carried out and supported by the infrastructure, technical resources, and laboratory facilities available at the University of Freiburg.
- Experimental researchers must identify a host laboratory in Freiburg and obtain a letter of support.
- Applicants from all nationalities are eligible.
- There is no specific age limit for applying.
