Opportunity description

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is offering a funded national volunteer opportunity under the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme for the position of Social Media Associate in Amman, Jordan, for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability, operational needs, and satisfactory performance.

The opportunity is aimed at individuals interested in social media management, digital marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, and content creation. It provides hands-on experience within UNICEF and the opportunity to contribute to strengthening its digital presence in the field of education globally. The volunteer will work directly with the Global Education Practice team to support the planning, production, and publication of content on platforms such as LinkedIn and X, while helping expand the reach of UNICEF’s education-related messages.

The assignment focuses on key education issues such as adolescent girls’ education, gender gaps in secondary school completion, foundational learning, education financing, and technology and innovation in education.

Duties & responsibilities

The volunteer’s responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the planning, writing, scheduling, and publishing of content across UNICEF platforms, particularly LinkedIn and X.
  • Creating and maintaining an editorial calendar for social media content.
  • Supporting the digital presence of UNICEF’s Global Director of Education by drafting social media posts and talking points on their behalf.
  • Producing visual and multimedia content, including graphics, social media cards, short videos, and simple animations.
  • Writing engaging content about global education priorities.
  • Monitoring social media trends and conversations to identify relevant opportunities for content and engagement.
  • Monitoring potential risks or issues that could affect the organization’s reputation and reporting them to the supervisor.
  • Analyzing performance data and metrics such as reach, engagement, and audience growth.
  • Preparing analytical reports and providing recommendations to improve account performance.
  • Coordinating with communication teams across UNICEF headquarters, regional and country offices, as well as external partners.
  • Ensuring that content is inclusive, accessible, and uses gender-sensitive language.
  • Supporting digital coverage of events, launches, and campaigns.
  • Contributing to the development of content libraries, templates, and social media guidelines.

Eligibility criteria

To apply, candidates must:

  • Be between 18 and 80 years old.
  • Be a Jordanian citizen, a legal resident of Jordan, or hold refugee status in Jordan.
  • Have relevant professional experience in the field.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields or a related discipline:

  • Communications.
  • Marketing.
  • Journalism.
  • Digital media or social media.
  • Public Relations.

Required Experience and Skills

UNICEF is looking for a candidate who has:

  • At least one year of experience in social media management, digital communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience producing content for professional platforms such as LinkedIn and X is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of social media analytics.
  • The ability to create visual content or simple videos is considered an advantage.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Creativity and initiative.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • An interest in education, gender equality, and international development.
  • Previous experience with or within an international organization is considered an advantage.
