The Moth Magazine is now accepting submissions for The Moth Nature Writing Prize 2026, an annual international literary competition that aims to support and encourage nature writing and celebrate literary works that combine strong writing quality with an exploration of the relationship between humans and the natural world. The competition accepts entries from writers around the world, making it suitable for writers and creatives from Arab countries as well.
Applicants may submit either one poem of any length or one prose piece, fiction or non-fiction, of up to 4,000 words, provided that the work is original and has not been previously published. Entries are judged anonymously by a single judge, and the writer’s name must not appear on the submitted work.
Benefits
Winners will receive:
- First Prize: €1,000.
- A one-week stay at The Moth Retreat in Ireland for the first-place winner.
- Second Prize: €500.
- Third Prize: €250.
- Publication of the winning entries on The Irish Times website.
- The opportunity to reach an international audience within the global writing and literary community.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants are eligible to enter if they:
- Are over 16 years old at the time of submission.
- Are from any country or nationality worldwide.
- Submit an original work written by themselves.
- Submit a work that has not been previously published, whether in print, self-published, online, or broadcast in any form.
- Submit the work in English.
- Do not use artificial intelligence to create the submitted work.
Entry Conditions
- The writer’s name must not appear on the same page as the submitted work.
- There is no limit to the number of entries a participant may submit.
- A separate entry fee must be paid for each submission.
- The same work may be submitted simultaneously to other competitions or organizations.
- Entries cannot be edited after submission.
- Entry fees are non-refundable once the submission has been received.
- The writer retains the intellectual property rights to their work, while granting The Moth the right to publish winning entries in The Irish Times and in promotional materials related to the prize.
