Opportunity description
UNV offers an online volunteer opportunity for 12 weeks in the field of translation and interpretation. UNHCR is looking for online volunteers to provide interpretation services for registration, refugee status determination, protection, and resettlement interviews, translating from French into various Sub-Saharan African languages (e.g., Malinke, Bissa, Dendi, Dogon, Soninke, Moré, and Mossi). Interviews will be conducted remotely via Teams, starting at 8:30 AM (Algiers time).
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Interpret interviews for different protection units, dedicating 1 to 3 hours per day from French to the specified Sub-Saharan African languages.
- Ensure that interpretations are concise, align with our code of conduct, and are appropriate for the audience.
- Play a vital role in ensuring effective communication and providing support to those seeking protection.
Eligibility criteria
You must:
- Be native speakers of one of the specified Sub-Saharan African languages (Malinke, Bissa, Dendi, Dogon, Soninke, Moré, or Mossi).
- Fluent in French.
- The ability to translate and interpret effectively, using simple, clear, and understandable language for all participants.
- Experience working as an interpreter for interviews with refugees is a valuable asset.
- Be familiar with UNHCR's goals, mandate, and the principles of confidentiality and impartiality.
- Aware of communication guidelines and best practices in interpretation to ensure your work aligns with UNHCR's standards.
- Ability to work 16 - 20 hours per week.
Please note:
- The program period is 12 weeks.
- All individuals engaged by UNHCR to provide interpretation services must sign the UNHCR Interpreter Undertaking of Confidentiality and Impartiality, which will be provided upon confirmation of nomination.
- Online volunteers will receive induction training on UNHCR’s mandate and interpretation modalities related to refugees.
