Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers program offers a volunteer opportunity as an interpreter in the Saudi Arabia. The project will provide a strategic framework for UNDP to provide technical assistance, advisory services, and quality assurance services to the Riyadh Municipality to implement its tasks, and in particular to perform its functions more efficiently and effectively in the areas of cooperation that this project focuses on. This UNV mission is part of UNDP Saudi Arabia's efforts to strengthen volunteerism and increase its capacity to respond to various requests for technical assistance from colleagues and counterparts.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Performing written translations when needed.
  • Translating documents from Arabic to English and vice versa.
  • Proofreading texts in Arabic and English.
  • Conducting consecutive, simultaneous and oral translation in Arabic and English.
  • Providing interpretation to international project staff and other non-Arabic speakers at presentations, meetings, conferences, training courses and briefings.
  • Perform other translation tasks when needed.
  • Documenting and transcribing meetings and preparing summaries and minutes of meetings.
  • Drafting letters in Arabic and/or English addressed to national counterparts.
  • Conducting research on topics related to sustainable development in general and on a number of thematic issues in particular.
  • Perform any other related tasks that may be required or assigned by your immediate supervisor.
  • Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant UNV and external publications and actively participating in UNV activities (for example in events marking World Volunteer Day).
  • Recognize and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteering in the host country.
  • Contribute articles/writings on field experiences to UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage individuals and relevant local organizations to use the UNV online volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
  • You must be a citizen or legal resident of the country of opportunity.
  • 3 years of experience in a related field.
  • Attention and commitment to the mission, vision and values of the United Nations Development Program.
  • Motivation to contribute to achieving peace, development and serving others.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and openness to learning and new experiences.
  • Respect for diversity and ability to adapt to other cultures, environments and living conditions. .
  • Proficiency in writing and speaking skills in Arabic and English.
  • Computer skills (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, etc.).
  • Experience in the field of translation and interpretation.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in translation, interpretation or any other related field.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Creativity skills.
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • Professionalism at work.
