The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship Program 2027 is a fully funded research fellowship in Japan designed for non-Japanese researchers who hold a doctoral degree. The fellowship provides an opportunity for researchers to conduct their research at a host institution in Japan, such as a university, national research institute, or other recognized academic organization.
The program aims to promote international cooperation and mutual understanding by supporting outstanding researchers from around the world and encouraging academic exchange with Japanese institutions. Preference is given to research projects that contribute to scientific advancement and global development.

Eligibility criteria
- Applicants must be non-Japanese nationals.
- Applicants must hold a PhD degree at the time of application.
- Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of application (born in 1981 or later).
- Applicants must be employed full-time in their home country.
- Applicants must intend to return to their home country after the fellowship and contribute to its development.
- Applicants must not have previous or current long-term residency in Japan, except for short stays such as tourism or conference participation.
- Applicants must obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Applicants must possess sufficient proficiency in either English or Japanese.
Required Documents
- Completed official application form.
- Statement of purpose explaining the reason for applying for the fellowship (up to 500 words).
- Research proposal of no more than five pages.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) and list of publications.
- Letter of recommendation from the current employer or institution.
- Copy of the PhD degree certificate.
- Acceptance letter from the host professor or host institution in Japan.
