Opportunity description

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is accepting applications for a remote United Nations volunteering opportunity titled Social Media Support, aimed at supporting the communication and advocacy activities of the UN Human Rights Office in New York.

This is one of the international online volunteering opportunities suitable for individuals with experience in social media management, content creation, design, media, and digital communications who wish to use their skills to support human rights issues and raise awareness of OHCHR’s activities, reports, and campaigns.

The volunteer will work with the Public Information Officer and relevant colleagues to develop visual content and social media posts highlighting the work of the United Nations Human Rights Office in New York.

The opportunity lasts for 12 weeks, requiring approximately 11 to 15 hours per week, and all tasks are carried out fully online, with no need to travel to or be physically present in the United States.

Duties & responsibilities

The volunteer will be responsible for:

  • Preparing 3 social media posts per week.
  • Developing content to promote OHCHR advocacy initiatives.
  • Creating content to highlight reports and statements issued by the Human Rights Office.
  • Contributing to the promotion of campaigns and events.
  • Researching suitable images to accompany social media posts.
  • Assisting in the production of visual communication materials.
  • Collaborating with the Public Information Officer and relevant colleagues.
  • Producing accurate, high-quality content within the required deadlines.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants are preferably expected to have:

  • Professional experience in social media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Experience or strong knowledge in creating social media content.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of design software and social media platforms is preferred.
  • The ability to work independently while maintaining good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to produce accurate, concise, and high-quality work.
