Opportunity description

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in collaboration with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, has announced an online volunteering opportunity with the United Nations titled Support with POC Framework Analysis. The opportunity is aimed at individuals interested in data analysis, database management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data visualization, and digital systems development.

A total of 5 volunteers will be selected to work remotely for 4 weeks, for approximately 16 to 20 hours per week, supporting the development and improvement of an electronic framework related to Protection of Civilians (POC). The framework is used by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to collect and analyze information related to incidents, threats, affected areas, and populations at greater risk.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Review previous Protection of Civilians reports and extract and organize relevant data.
  • Enter and organize data within the electronic platform.
  • Assist in developing databases covering incidents, threats, vulnerable groups, geographic locations, and responses.
  • Suggest improvements to the platform’s functionality, usability, navigation, and user experience.
  • Improve data quality, consistency, and integrity.
  • Assist in developing and enhancing dashboards and analytical reports.
  • Analyze trends in protection incidents, threats, early warning indicators, and hotspot areas.
  • Develop maps, charts, infographics, and other visual materials to support decision-making.
  • Prepare user guides, quick reference guides, and draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Test forms, dashboards, maps, and different platform functionalities.
  • Identify technical issues and data gaps and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Contribute to developing a plan for scaling up the platform and ensuring its future sustainability.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applications are open to online volunteers regardless of their geographic location or nationality, in accordance with UNV Online Volunteering rules.
  • Hold a university degree or be currently enrolled at a university in one of the following fields or a related discipline:
    • Computer Science.
    • Information Systems.
    • Data Science.
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
    • Information Management.
    • Software Development.
    • International Relations.
    • Humanitarian Affairs.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Preferably have experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Information management and database development.
    • Data analysis and visualization.
    • Online platforms and digital solutions.
    • GIS and spatial analysis.
    • Monitoring, reporting, and knowledge management systems.
    • Humanitarian work, protection of civilians, peacekeeping, human rights, or development.
  • Knowledge of tools such as Power BI, Tableau, ArcGIS, or QGIS is considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of UX/UI principles and data quality management is also considered an advantage.
