Online Volunteering with UN Volunteer: Translation and Interpretation

UN Volunteer is looking for online volunteers to be part of the Social Development International (SODEIT) Global Support Centre - Translation and Interpretation Team.

The SODEIT Global Support Centre was established in April 2020 in response to manmade and natural disasters in West and Central Africa and the ongoing local challenges to vulnerable communities in Cameroon and Sierra Leone. The support Centre was launched with over 500 United Nations Online Volunteers who came together with one mission – to safeguard the vulnerable communities in Cameroon and Sierra Leone. The Support Centre operates virtually and is divided into 20 teams led by 40 team leaders from across the world who dedicate over 30 hours per week to this humanitarian aid. Each team member uses the skills learned so far in life to build a safer, healthier, and caring living environment with the other team members who they have not met before and for the people who they do not know so well. However, all of them have a common purpose and no matter how difficult the challenges may be, they are pursuing their best endeavors to change for good.

Members are responsible for managing SODEIT’s translation and interpretation services, from English to other UN languages, ensures effective and high-quality translation and interpretation services are provided to the entire organization:

• Translate work of center into other languages for social media and reports
• Proofread written documents and research on industry-specific terminology;
• Convert text and audio recordings from one language to another or more;
• Translate official reports and video subtitles from English into French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and other languages by SODEIT's available translators;
• Ensure translated texts convey the original meaning and tone for the charity i.e. brand management.
• Manage the Translation and Interpretation (T&I) activities, to ensure effective, efficient, and timely delivery of translation and interpretation services to support SODEIT’s overall strategy;
• Ensure that high-quality translation and interpretation services are provided;

• Minimum Bachelor degree in either Translation or Interpretation;
• 3-5 years of experience in translation and/or interpretation team;
• Track record in team works through a time of change;
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills;
• Proven ability to work collaboratively and across teams to achieve systems improvements;
• Demonstrated cross-cultural skills and ability to work with team members from different cultural backgrounds;
• Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
