Opportunity description

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, is offering a paid national volunteer opportunity for the position of Communication Officer: Digital & Public Outreach in Pretoria, South Africa.

The volunteer will work within the Communications Unit of the UNDP South Africa Country Office and will contribute to implementing the organization’s communications strategy, producing digital and visual stories and content, supporting media and public outreach campaigns, and developing knowledge products that strengthen UNDP’s visibility and impact.

The opportunity focuses particularly on digital media, video and photography production, podcast creation, story and article writing, content management, social media communications, media relations, and digital analysis of content performance.

Duties & responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and producing human-interest stories, success stories, case studies, and articles.
  • Producing written, visual, and digital content for UNDP platforms.
  • Coordinating photography assignments, video production, and field interviews.
  • Producing videos, podcasts, interviews, and short-form content.
  • Writing and editing website articles, newsletters, speeches, blogs, and social media posts.
  • Monitoring digital content performance and analyzing audience and engagement data.
  • Preparing digital performance reports and providing recommendations to improve reach and engagement.
  • Preparing creative briefs and terms of reference for media service providers.
  • Coordinating communication plans and media campaigns.
  • Organizing media support for conferences, events, workshops, and launches.
  • Supporting media relations, preparing press materials, and coordinating interviews.
  • Coordinating with programme teams, United Nations units, and external partners.
  • Contributing to partnerships with media outlets, universities, and content creators.
  • Assisting with the preparation of annual reports, corporate publications, and knowledge products.
  • Managing and developing the digital asset library and the Communications Unit’s SharePoint platform.
  • Maintaining databases of journalists, photographers, and media service providers.
  • Ensuring that published materials comply with UNDP branding, editorial, and accessibility standards.

Eligibility criteria

The main eligibility and experience requirements include:

  • Experience producing high-quality stories and media content.
  • The ability to turn technical or development-related topics into clear and engaging content.
  • Experience in photography, video production, podcasting, interviews, and scriptwriting.
  • Experience coordinating content production and working with multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience managing digital content and social media, as well as analyzing performance and engagement.
  • Experience supporting campaigns, events, and public outreach activities.
  • Practical knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Lightroom, and InDesign, or Canva.
  • Familiarity with website and content management systems and SharePoint.
  • Good research, analytical, and data visualization skills.
  • Knowledge of topics such as sustainable development, climate, governance, digital transformation, innovation, youth, gender equality, and social protection is preferred.
  • Previous experience with the United Nations or international development organizations is considered an advantage.
