Opportunity description

The Graduate Institute Geneva is offering Master and PhD Scholarships for international students all over the world.  The Graduate Institute strives to attract talented scholars from around the world, regardless of origin and financial ability. It invests over CHF 2 million each year to support the students throughout their studies.

Benefits

  • The Institute strives to support its students throughout the duration of their studies, to the extent of its ability. It does so through financial aid (below) and paid jobs (teaching assistantships, research assistantships and administrative positions).
  • A student might be awarded one type of aid or a combination of different types of support:
  • Scholarships: partial (CHF 10,000 per year) or full (CHF 20,000 per year).
  • For the most highly ranked PhD students, a 4-year package combining 2 years of full scholarship and 2 years of teaching assistantship.
  • Tuition reduction.
  • Paid employment at the Graduate Institute: teaching assistantships, research assistantships, administrative support positions.

Eligibility criteria

  • For Master students:
  • Master candidates can apply for financial aid by filling in the application fields concerning their financial situation.
  •  When making its decision regarding the allocation of scholarships for admitted master candidates, the Financial Aid Committee will decide whether to award a full or a partial scholarship and/or tuition reduction, depending on the applicants' financial resources and the excellence of their application.
  • Once candidates have been granted admission and funding, provided that their financial situation does not change, the award will be renewed for the second year. They will thus be able to finance their entire course of study.
  • Master candidates who want to apply for  financial aid must document all the elements that impact their financial situation, including all sources of income, liquidities, capital and contributions from family members and other organisations.
  • For PhD students:
  • All PhD candidates are eligible for financial support, regardless of their financial situation.
  • When completing their application form, doctoral candidates should not fill in the fields relating to their finances, which only apply to master programme candidates.
  • Academic departments rank the files of all the PhD applicants they admit based on academic excellence and originality of the research project. They then submit their rankings to the PhD Admission and Financial Aid Committee.
  • There are two types of financial support and Teaching Assistantships:
  • A 4-year package (2 years full scholarship and 2 years Teaching Assistantship). Financial aid in the form of a 4-year PhD package for incoming PhD researchers is awarded based on the ranking established by academic departments. These packages are awarded to the six most highly ranked candidates in each department.
  • Within the limits of the available budget, the PhD Admission and Financial Aid Committee may also allocate a scholarship (full or partial), a tuition reduction, and/ or Teaching Assistantship of one year, renewable, to currently enrolled PhD researchers. These may be either PhD researchers admitted with no funding; or, exceptionally, PhD researchers who seek a 5th year funding.
  • Financial aid is generally renewed for subsequent years of study, provided that recipients are in good academic standing and are able to continue to document their financial need.
