Opportunity description

The European University Institute (EUI) offers a one-year LLM program in Comparative, European and International Law in Florence. It is predominantly research-based and focusses on the acquisition and practice of research skills and on the preparation of a dissertation. It addresses candidates who wish to advance their legal knowledge and their ability to develop and express scholarly analyses, in a stimulating international and interdisciplinary environment. The programme is taught by eminent academics, including professors of the EUI, as well as world-renowned guest professors and experts. The programme is attended by an international body of researchers, selected with highly competitive admission criteria.

Benefits

  • Admitted candidates will be requested to declare that they have sufficient resources to cover their living expenses in Florence for the entire duration of the programme and to pay the tuition fee of 12,000 EUR (if applicable).
  • Candidates with funding from external private or public institutions are accepted as well as self-funding candidates.
  • Financial contributions of 5,000 EUR each are offered by the EUI, on a competitive basis, to candidates who do not receive funding from another source. The contributions are awarded, by decision of the Law Department, to top-ranked candidates selected for admission (no separate application is required).

Eligibility criteria

  • Diploma equivalent to the minimum qualification needed to study for a Ph.D. in a given country.
  • The expected level of English proficiency is level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Applicants are required to submit an English international language certificate to demonstrate their level.
  • Candidates who speak English as a first language or who have written their thesis in English for completion of a degree from a university programme entirely taught in English are exempt from submitting a certificate of English proficiency.
  • Candidates who submit a certificate with a test score below the threshold indicated are not automatically rejected; if they are pre-selected they will be asked to take an English language assessment test with the EUI.
  • Candidates who are unable to provide a certificate by 31 January must attach a personal declaration to the application form stating the reason for this.
  • Note on EUI English language assessment tests: If the results of the test fall below the expected level of English proficiency, the candidate may nevertheless be conditionally admitted, but will have to follow English Academic Literacies courses during the programme.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic record: Candidates are expected to have sufficient background in theory and research methodology relevant to the discipline and research project.
  • Quality of the research proposal: The originality and feasibility of the LL.M. proposal play a crucial role both in the initial pre-selection and the interview.
  • Potential supervision: The department carefully examines whether it can provide suitable supervision for the candidate, taking into account the profile of the department and distribution of supervision among its academic staff for the whole of the period concerned.
  • Language abilities: All candidates must have a good knowledge of English.

Selection Process and Schedule:

  • 31 January: Deadline for applications and references.
  • Mid-March Invitations for interviews for shortlisted candidates are sent by e-mail. Candidates who are not shortlisted are also informed by e-mail.
  • 4-5 April: Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by the departmental panel.
  • Mid-April: Candidates are informed of the admission results by e-mail.
  • May to July: Formal admission letters are sent by e-mail. Practical information for selected candidates is posted on the Academic Service's web pages. Reserve candidates may be contacted during this period if selected candidates withdraw.
  • End of August: Registration of new researchers.
  • 1 September: Academic Year begins.
