Qatar National Library (QNL) has announced the opening of applications for the third cycle of its Research Fellowship Program. This is a six-month, in-person research program focused on studying and documenting historical materials related to the State of Qatar.
The fellowship aims to give researchers the opportunity to use Qatar National Library’s collections, especially the Heritage Library and archival sources, to produce original research that highlights Qatar’s social, economic, and environmental history from the 18th century through the 1980s.
This fellowship is suitable for researchers and individuals interested in the history of Qatar, Gulf studies, social history, economic history, natural resources, archives, heritage, and the humanities, provided that they reside in Qatar and are able to commit to attending in person at Qatar National Library throughout the fellowship period.
Research Areas for 2026
Research proposals must be related to the history of Qatar from the 18th century through the 1980s, within one of the following themes:
- Social history, such as family, kinship, demographics, labor, material culture, social structures, and cultural and religious practices.
- Economic history, such as maritime trade, economic systems, industrialization, technological change, public finance, and economic crises.
- Natural resource management, such as grazing, agriculture, irrigation, traditional environmental knowledge, water, land and soil management, and marine resources.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Qatari citizen or an expatriate resident in Doha.
- Be physically present in Qatar throughout the fellowship period.
- Hold a valid Qatari residence permit throughout the fellowship period.
- Previous applicants who were not selected may reapply.
- Submit a research proposal related to the fellowship themes and Qatar National Library’s collections.
- Commit to working on the project for 20 hours per week through in-person attendance at Qatar National Library.
- Be proficient in Arabic or English.
- Submit a research paper of at least 6,000 words within one month after the end of the fellowship.
- Deliver a public presentation on the research findings.
- Attend monthly follow-up meetings with representatives of Qatar National Library.
- Acknowledge Qatar National Library in any publications resulting from the research.
- Grant the library the right of first publication or adaptation of the final research materials.
- Participate in promotional activities, such as media interviews or social media posts, when needed.
Required Documents
- A completed and signed application form that includes the project title.
- A CV in Arabic or English, not exceeding 5 pages.
- A research proposal of no more than 2,000 words.
- A research timeline outlining the project stages and expected outcomes.
- A list of the sources, archival materials, or Qatar National Library collections that the researcher intends to use.
- Two recommendation letters addressed to the Qatar National Library Fellowship team.
- Supporting documents such as publications or portfolios, if available.
