Opportunity description

The Radcliffe Fellowship 2027–2028 at Harvard Radcliffe Institute is a prestigious one-year academic and creative fellowship hosted by Harvard University. The program brings together outstanding scholars, researchers, writers, journalists, public intellectuals, and artists from around the world to pursue ambitious and innovative projects in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

The fellowship supports projects in fields including science, humanities, social sciences, creative arts, journalism, and nonfiction writing.

Eligibility criteria

The fellowship is open to applicants from a wide range of fields, including humanities, social sciences, arts, journalism, nonfiction writing, science, engineering, and mathematics.

General eligibility requirements include:

  • Applicants are not required to hold a tenured academic position.
  • Individuals currently enrolled in a degree-granting academic program are not eligible to apply.
  • The fellowship is not intended as a postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Previous recipients of a Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship since 1999 are not eligible.
  • Applicants must meet the specific eligibility requirements of their discipline.

Discipline-Specific Requirements

Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree obtained before the specified eligibility date.
  • Have published at least one scholarly book or a minimum of two peer-reviewed journal articles or chapters in edited volumes.

Science, Engineering, and Mathematics

  • Hold a PhD in a field relevant to the proposed project.
  • Have published at least five peer-reviewed scholarly articles.

Journalism

  • Have a minimum of five years of professional journalism experience.

Nonfiction Writing

  • Have published a book, secured a book publishing contract, or published at least three substantial nonfiction works beyond standard newspaper or magazine articles.

Creative Arts

  • Eligibility requirements vary depending on the discipline, such as visual arts, filmmaking, poetry, theater, fiction writing, or music composition.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • A completed online application form.
  • A current curriculum vitae (CV).
  • A project proposal of approximately 1,400 words.
  • A bibliography or reference list, where applicable.
  • A writing sample or sample of creative, scholarly, or research work.
  • Contact information for three referees who will provide recommendation letters.
