Opportunity description

The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) is offering the Andrew K. Burroughs Short-Term Training Fellowship for postgraduate investigators (both basic and clinical investigators) who intend to spend a limited amount of time (usually 3-6 months) at a foreign institution to accomplish a very focused research project, to learn an experimental procedure or methodology, or to acquire in-depth knowledge about a sophisticated, clinical or diagnostic procedure not available at the Home Institution. 

Fellow's Responsibilities:

  • The fellowship must begin at the latest by the end of the year of the awarded grant and it is not renewable.
  • Successful applicants will receive a total fund of EUR 3,000 per month from EASL for the entire research project.
  • Successful applicants are requested to submit a photo and short project summary to be posted on the EASL website, social media, and newsletter.
  • After receiving the fellowship, the fellow should make him/herself available to present the data upon request of the EASL Governing Board.
  • A brief progress report accompanied by a letter from the supervisor at the hosting institution detailing the project's accomplishment is requested at the end of the program.
  • In the event that the award recipient is unable to complete the research or wishes to discontinue the research before its completion, the award recipient will be required to return all unexpended funds within 30 days of notification and any remaining award will be canceled.
  • Any presentation or publication of the data should mention that it was supported by the work of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

Benefits

The Andrew K. Burroughs Short-Term Training Fellowship provides EUR 3,000 of funding for up to six months. The bench fee reimbursement is not included. 

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates must be active EASL members or have applied for membership at the time of the application;
  • Candidates must have an M.D. or Ph.D. degree at the time that the fellowship is awarded.
  • Candidates must be no more than 40 years old, with time allowed for parental leave in line with EU standards: 1.5 years per child for mothers and respective time taken off for fathers).;
  • The Hosting Institution must be located in Europe, and at a different location from where the applicant is presently working;
  • No more than 1 application per each home department will be considered during a period of 2 years following the grant allocation;
  • The research/clinical supervisor in the hosting institution must be an EASL member but must not be a member of the EASL Governing Board;
  • No restriction on the applicant's nationality.

Application Requirements:

  • A detailed CV;
  • 2 reference letters (including one from the candidate’s senior mentor at the Home Institution);
  • A project summary;
  • An official letter of support signed by the candidate’s supervisor at the Hosting Institution including a statement detailing how much of the design and research work will be done by the candidate and the expected goals of the project.

EASL is a non-profit organization with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. It performs its duty under a written constitution. The association is managed by the EASL Governing Board made up of 12 elected members, all active in the medical field. EASL is composed of individual members who renew their membership on a yearly basis. EASL members meet once a year during the Business Meeting held during The International Liver Congress™. It aims to spread knowledge and expertise in best practices and the latest scientific breakthroughs in hepatology as well as providing education to all those interested in hepatology.
