Opportunity description

The SPIE is pleased to invite amateur and professional photographers to the SPIE International Day of Light Photo competition. It is held annually to raise awareness about the International Day of Light and to demonstrate the impact that light has on the cultural, economic, and political aspects of the world. Just submit your best photos, and you have a chance to win cash prizes.

Competition Theme:

This year’s theme is “The Power of Light,” which aims to showcase the transformative and awe-inspiring impact of light on lives, communities, and the planet. Examples of content include but are not exclusive to, artistic images that depict:

  • Various properties of light and how it interacts with the atmosphere, nature, and materials.
  • Light technology such as lasers, LEDs, etc.
  • Images created with light technology such as telescopes and microscopes.
  • People interacting with light and/or light technology.
  • The betterment of the human condition with light.
  • Two technology-specific divisions, “Technology-Made Images” and a “Technology Around the Globe,” are also available for entry.

Benefits

If you are among the winners, you will get one of the following prizes:

  • First Prize: US $2,500
  • Second Prize: US $1,000
  • Third Prize: US $500
  • Technology and Science Prizes: US $750
  • Winning photographs will also be published in various SPIE publications, online, and other printed materials, and displayed at SPIE conferences and exhibitions.

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following criteria:

  • The photo contest is open to adults aged 18 and up, both amateur and professional photographers, except employees of SPIE and optics.org, their immediate families, the contest judges, and consultants/contractors of SPIE.
  • Photographs must be in digital format, suitable for public exhibition, and printing at high resolution.
  • All images must be 300 dpi or more and at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side.
  • File size should be no less than 5MB and no greater than 20MB.
  • TIF and JPEG/JPG are the ONLY accepted formats.
  • By entering the International Day of Light Photo Contest, you are agreeing to the rules.

Competition Timeline:

  • 16 May 2024: Photo Contest opens
  • 16 September 2024: Photo Contest closes
  • 16 October 2024: Winners are notified
  • 30 October 2024: Winners are announced

Judging Criteria:

Each photograph will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Content
  2. Scientific Interest
  3. Creativity/Artistry
  4. Execution
  5. Overall appeal for the International Day of Light.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The not-for-profit society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. In 2019, SPIE provided $5 million in support of education and outreach programs.
