The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Germany, through the United Nations Volunteers program, announces an international volunteering opportunity to work as a Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Expert in Bonn for 6 months.
This opportunity is part of the UN-SPIDER program, which aims to support the use of space technology, satellite data, and geographic information in disaster risk management and emergency response.
The volunteer will analyze satellite data, support the preparation of emergency maps, and provide technical expertise to Member States in using Earth observation data and remote sensing to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

Duties & responsibilities
- Lead the acquisition and processing of multi-source satellite data, including optical data and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data.
- Support disaster risk assessment and emergency response using Earth observation data.
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of technical advisory missions for Member States.
- Provide advice on integrating space-based information and Earth observation data into disaster risk management frameworks.
- Develop and update technical content, training materials, and recommended practices on the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal.
- Support the network of UN-SPIDER Regional Support Offices.
- Provide technical support in geographic information systems and remote sensing during disasters.
- Support emergency mapping mechanisms such as the International Charter “Space and Major Disasters.”
- Coordinate with United Nations entities and partner organizations during emergencies.
- Contribute to identifying new project opportunities and preparing proposals to support disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
Eligibility criteria
- The applicant must be between 30 and 60 years old.
- The applicant must be of a nationality different from the country of assignment, meaning they must not be a German national.
- The applicant must have up to 7 years of required experience, with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- The applicant must hold a master’s degree in one of the following fields:
- Remote Sensing.
- Geomatics.
- Earth Sciences.
- A related engineering field.
- Fluency in English is required.
- The applicant must have experience in satellite remote sensing, geospatial analysis, or Earth observation fields.
- Experience in processing Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite data and SAR data is required.
- Experience using tools such as Google Earth Engine, Python, or cloud-based geospatial analysis platforms is required.
- Experience in creating Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and surface models, especially for flood or storm surge modeling in coastal areas, is required.
- Experience in disaster risk reduction (DRR) projects is a strong advantage.
- Experience in artificial intelligence or machine learning for feature extraction from satellite imagery is an additional advantage.
- Previous experience with the United Nations or international development organizations is an additional advantage.
- The applicant must have strong skills in writing, reporting, technical drafting, and working under pressure.
