Opportunity description

The University of Helsinki is one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and ranks among the top 1% of universities worldwide. It offers interdisciplinary research-based education and includes over 30 international master’s programs taught in English.

The University of Helsinki scholarship program provides tuition fee waivers for international students from outside the EU/EEA. The waiver can cover 50% or 100% of the annual tuition fee, depending on academic performance and motivation. The scholarship is available for up to two years (the full duration of the master’s program), with the condition of completing 55 ECTS credits in the first academic year to maintain the scholarship for the second year.

Application Deadline

  • The application period for master’s programs starting in autumn 2026 is from 2 to 16 January 2026.
  • Applications for admission and scholarships must be submitted during this period. An application fee of €100 applies to applicants from outside the EU/EEA unless exempt.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicant must be from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland and liable for tuition fees (i.e., not holding permanent residency that grants exemption)
  • Must meet admission criteria for one of the University of Helsinki’s master’s programs
  • Strong academic performance and excellent academic record
  • Meet the Finnish visa and residence permit requirements for studies
  • Commit to full-time studies and complete 55 ECTS credits in the first year to maintain the scholarship
