Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers Program is offering a volunteer opportunity as an Assistant Information Officer in South Sudan. You will be responsible for supporting data and information management activities in South Sudan. You will be part of a team of data and information management working on information and data management activities covering data assessment, design, and evaluation of data and related statistical activities. This includes assessing the information landscape; identifying information and data needs; designing its activities, including data collection, analysis, storage, and dissemination; carrying out data and information management activities; and monitoring and evaluation of management activities. The focus in this role is very much on operational data related to assessment, planning, monitoring, and evaluation.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Participate in the data and information management team.
  • Support standardization of data systems, including interoperability of data and operational systems.
  • Support the process of analyzing primary and secondary data, and making the necessary decisions.
  • Support the monitoring of data and information management activities in offices for integrity, honesty, reliability, credibility, and compliance with policies.
  • Provide technical support and training to field offices when needed.
  • Support assessments and situational analysis using analytical frameworks and data collection and analysis processes.
  • Analyze trends related to changes at the outcome level.
  • Work with Program/ODM staff on the design and delivery of data and information management products for internal and external use.
  • Conduct the necessary geographical and statistical analysis.
  • Review data collection and accuracy.
  • Analyze the data and ensure its integrity.
  • Provide technical support in managing web-based data portals.
  • Work in close collaboration with staff to increase knowledge of data and assist in its interpretation and analysis.
  • Work with program staff on the design, implementation, and analysis of the RMS system.
  • Perform any other related duties when required.
  • Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant UNV publications and external publications.
  • Actively participate in UNV activities (eg events celebrating International Volunteer Day; reflection on the type of volunteer work you do, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; UNV publications/websites, newsletters press releases, etc.).
  • Assistance with the UNV Friends Program for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteer Service whenever technically possible.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
  • You must be a national of any country other than the country of appointment.
  • 3 years of experience in data management.
  • Ability to collect data and preferably knowledge of Power BI, proGres v4, and Microsoft Access. ArcGIS / ArcMap, Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop, SQL.
  • Statistical information analysis skills.
  • Ability to formulate technical requirements related to information management and operating procedures.
  • The ability to comprehensively aggregate and analyze diverse datasets.
  • Experience in handling confidential data.
  • Understanding of different data collection methodologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Experience in web design and software development.
  • High level of ethics and integrity.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to continuous effort through diligence and the pursuit of high standards.
