UNICEF Algeria is offering a full-time 12-month national volunteer opportunity in Tindouf, Algeria, for the position of Programme Associate – Social and Behaviour Change under the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. The assignment focuses on supporting programmes related to early childhood development, social and behaviour change, nutrition, and positive parenting within the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf.
The volunteer will work with UNICEF’s Tindouf office to support children and families across five refugee camps, with a particular focus on children in the early years of life. Activities include promoting responsive caregiving, learning through play, proper nutrition, engagement of fathers and caregivers, and the inclusion of children with disabilities in community-based programmes.
Benefits and Allowances
The announced UNV package includes:
- Entry Lump Sum: USD 400.
- A USD 200 relocation allowance at the beginning and end of the assignment if the duty station is outside the normal commuting area.
- Monthly Living Allowance: DZD 115,273.89.
- Danger and Hardship Differential (DHD): DZD 34,582.16.
- Annual leave at a rate of 2.5 days per month of service.

Duties & responsibilities
- Support the implementation of Early Childhood Development (ECD), nurturing care, and positive parenting activities.
- Organize sessions for caregivers, fathers’ groups, community dialogues, and home-based activities.
- Promote early learning through play, early stimulation, and child development.
- Support community activities related to maternal and child nutrition, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and dietary diversity.
- Assist with breastfeeding support sessions and engage fathers, grandmothers, and other family members in promoting healthy practices.
- Support the integration of gender equality and shared childcare responsibilities into programme activities.
- Contribute to the training and mentoring of community health workers, facilitators, and partner teams.
- Participate in field visits, monitoring, and supervision of programme implementation.
- Collect and analyze data related to community engagement, nutrition, and child development.
- Document behavioural challenges, lessons learned, and promising practices.
- Prepare human-interest stories and case studies on positive parenting in line with UNICEF’s ethical standards and child safeguarding requirements.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Be between 18 and 60 years old.
- Be an Algerian citizen, legal resident in Algeria, or recognized refugee in Algeria.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:
- Communication for Development.
- Psychology.
- Social and Behaviour Change.
- Sociology.
- Public Health and Nutrition.
- Community Development.
- Have relevant professional experience, with the announcement effectively requiring at least two years of experience in areas such as early childhood development, parenting, community engagement, nutrition, health education, or education.
- Be fluent in French and Arabic.
- Preferably have a working knowledge of English.
- Have a good understanding of positive parenting, responsive caregiving, child development, and learning through play.
- Be able to work within multicultural and multidisciplinary teams and be willing to participate in frequent field visits.
