Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers Program is offering a volunteer opportunity as an Air Operations Assistant in South Sudan. This opportunity will be in the Aviation Section of UNMISS based in Yambio where you will be responsible for Air Operations tasks within the state and will report to the Chief of Air Operations in Juba, through the WES Sector Air Operations Officer.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Report to the Sector Air Operations Officer on all operational and administrative matters and personnel performance.
  • Oversee all aviation and fire safety activities in the area.
  • Ensure that all fire safety equipment is serviceable and coordinate with the Fire Director when necessary.
  • Advance planning activities within the state, which are submitted to the Mission Air Operations Center (MAOC) for approval.
  • Prepare Air Task Orders (ATOs) from the DFS and provide them to the crew for execution.
  • Processing daily trip schedule to AIMS.
  • Coordinate with local civil aviation officials in order to ensure smooth and effective air operations.
  • Inform the aircrew and state flight personnel of notices to pilots (NOTAMS) and other available information on flight operations.
  • Liaise with the State Field Administrative Officer (FAO) on all state aviation requirements and any Temporary Operating Base (TOB) / County Operating Base (COB) / County Support Base (CSB) within the state.
  • Report all changes and deviations to the Duty Officer and MAOC's Chief of Air Operations.
  • Report and file all observed safety hazards in the state.
  • Maintain a database of crew lists and risk/threat assessment forms.
  • Check fuel status and availability both in state and any relevant TOB/CSB.
  • Verify Aircraft Utilization Reports (AUR) for government air assets on a daily basis and submit information in relevant electronic databases as per UN requirements.
  • Participate in capacity building of national staff.
  • Check runway status and send HLS & Ramp Hazard Report to Juba prior to flight operations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Air Operations or Chief Flight Officer.
  • Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant UNV publications and actively participating in UNV activities (to stand in for events celebrating International Volunteer Day).
  • Learn about and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteering in the host country.
  • Reflect on the type and quality of volunteer work you do, including participating in ongoing reflection activities.
  • Assisting with the UNV Buddy Program for newly arrived UNVs.
  • Promote capacity development activities and transfer skills to national staff during assignment.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • Be between 27 and 80 years old.
  • Applicants must be nationals of any country other than the country of appointment.
  • You must have at least 3 years of experience in the aviation field, particularly related to air transportation operations, air traffic control or flight dispatch operations. 
  • General knowledge of international aviation regulations and ICAO standards and recommended practices is preferred.
  • Certificate in the use of computer programs and databases.
  • You must be familiar with the use of aviation terminology.
  • The ability to drive cars with a manual transmission.
  • Preferably experience with VHF and HF radio equipment.
  • Fluency in English with a working knowledge of Arabic.
  • Preferably a Technical/Professional Diploma in line with Aviation, Air Operations, Air Traffic Control and Flight Dispatching certifications.
    Adaptability, flexibility in work and creativity.
  • The ability to judge and make decisions.
  • Planning and organizing skills.
  • Professionalism at work and self-management skills.
