Opportunity description

Population Education is organizing World of 7 Billion Student Video Contest, as population growth is a threat multiplier – it makes other problems worse and more difficult to combat. Through the World of 7 Billion student video contest, middle and high schoolers are given the platform to think critically about global challenges related to population and share what they think we should do to fix it.

Explain how population growth impacts one of the following global challenges and offer an idea for a sustainable solution. The global challenges are: agriculture and food, urbanization, or ocean health.

Benefits

High School (9th-12th):

  • First Place winner receives $1,200
  • Second Place winner receives $600
  • Two Honorable Mention winners receive $300

Middle School (6th-8th):

  • First Place winner receives $600
  • Second Place winner receives $300

Best in State:

50 cash prizes will be awarded to the best video in each U.S. state.

Best International by Region:

Six cash prizes will be awarded to the best international video by world region (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America).

Eligibility criteria

  • The maximum video length is 60 seconds.
  • All videos must be in English or, if in another language, include English subtitles.
  • All entries must be submitted in digital format.
  • Students must currently be in U.S. grades 6 to 12, or the international equivalent, to be eligible to win.
  • Students may be located anywhere in the world.
  • Students may work together in groups or submit entries as individuals.
  • The length of the video should not exceed 60 seconds (one minute), not including the 5 second title screen (see #5).
  • All entries should begin with a 5 second full-screen “title screen” that includes the following information:
  1. Lead Producer’s name
  2. School name
  3. School city, state/country
  4. Title of video
  5. Total running time (not including the 5 second title screen)
  • All information presented in the video must be cited, giving credit to the original source. Plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification. You DO NOT need to include your citations in your video. IF CHOSEN AS A FINALIST, you must submit a list of your sources, properly cited.
  • Each video must have one Lead Producer to serve as the main point of contact. Recognition and prizes will be given to all producers listed on the entry form.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Entries may be submitted through the website starting on September 1, 2021. The deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm (eastern time, US) on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Winners will be announced no later than Tuesday, May 10, 2022.
  • Each entry must focus on ONE of following global challenges as it relates to population growth:
  1. Ocean Health
  2. Urbanization
  3. Agriculture and Food


Videos are judged by topic (Agriculture and Food; Urbanization; Ocean Health). Within each topic, awards will be presented as follows:
