Opportunity description

The World Press Photo Foundation announces its international competition for the best journalistic and documentary photographs produced during the past year, which will give participants the opportunity to win an 1,000 euros. Participation in the competition will open on December 1, 2023 and will continue until January 11, 2024.

Benefits

  • The winning works will be displayed in the competition's annual exhibition, which is viewed by more than 4 million visitors, and is displayed in more than 80 cities around the world. They will also be published on the website and social media platforms, followed by more than 2 million followers.
  • The winning works will be included in the competition yearbook.
  • Winners will receive:
    • €1,000 for each of the 24 regional winners and an additional €5,000 for the four global winners.
    • Invitation to attend the program for the winners in Amsterdam.
    • Physical award.

Eligibility criteria

  • Participation in the World Press Photo Contest is free and open to all professional photographers working in the field of photojournalism and/or documentary photography.
  • Each participant must submit a validly dated document confirming their current professional status. Examples of documents include, but are not limited to:
    • A press card stating that you work as a photographer.
    • Or proof of publication of at least one work (e.g. draft paper) from 2022 or 2023, with your name appearing on it, either online or in print in a recognized media or publication.
    • Or a membership card from the Journalists Syndicate.
    • Or a membership document from a recognized photography association proving that the photographer is a professional member.
    • Or a recent letter of reference (must be from 2022 or 2023) from a photo agency, media organization or publication, showing that you have worked for them as a photographer.
    • Or if you are not able to provide evidence that meets the above criteria, you may register with alternative documents so that the competition can get a better understanding of your professional status.
  • The following documents cannot be considered as proof of professional status:
    • Resumes or cover letters
    • Or diplomas
    • Or photographic samples
  • The organization reserves the right to request additional information to help clarify the participant's professional status.
  • A team of two or more photographers is permitted, but proof of professional status must be provided for each team member.
  • The photographer(s) must be the owner(s) of the photos submitted.
  • The photographer(s) or agent or representative entering on their behalf must be the copyright holder(s) or be authorized by the copyright holder(s) to submit images.
  • Entries must conform to the Contest categories as stated here.
  • Entries must meet the technical requirements of the competition.
  • Photographs may be submitted whether previously published or not.
  • Photos taken at private events (i.e. events to which only photographers authorized by the event organizers have access, e.g. photographers authorized by governments, political parties or companies) will not be accepted.
  • All entries must contain accurate captions and descriptions written in English. If the captions are translated, please also provide the original captions.
  • Each entry must include additional relevant information, such as motivation, project type (assignment/personal project) and funding.
  • All entries must comply with international photojournalism rules and ethics.
  • Entries can only be submitted via Picter, the official platform for participating in the competition.
  • Members of the World Press Photo team, the Contest Supervisory Board, the International Advisory Committee and the 2024 Contest Jury are not permitted to enter the Contest.
  • Participated images can only be entered once, either as an individual image, as part of a story, or as part of a longer-term project. However, projects entered in the Open Format category can contain photographs that are also entered in the Single Projects, Stories, or Long-Term Projects categories.
  • Images must not show the photographer's name, agency or other information (these details can be included in the image's metadata but must not be visible in the image itself).
  • Entrants must submit file(s) as recorded by the camera for all images that advance to the final stages of the competition. These file(s) will be requested and considered confidentially between January 25 and February 25, 2024. Failure to submit these file(s) upon request will result in disqualification of participating work.
