Opportunity description

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has opened applications for a Senior Data and Research International Consultant position within the Office of the Regional Director in Amman, Jordan. This is an international consultancy specializing in data analysis, research, planning, monitoring, and evaluation.

The consultancy aims to support UNICEF during the ECAMENA transition phase by developing a range of high-quality research and analytical products. This includes reviewing evidence and studies, documenting innovations related to statistical surveys, and preparing research papers on innovations in the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) programme in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The consultant will analyze data and evidence related to children, review methodologies and research products, and contribute to developing knowledge on child poverty, deprivation, and national data systems across the region.

Duties & responsibilities

The main responsibilities include:

  • Preparing a workshop report related to the ECAMENA transition phase.
  • Reviewing and assessing a range of research products and evidence.
  • Conducting methodological reviews and providing analytical feedback on complex studies and research products.
  • Documenting selected innovations used in statistical surveys.
  • Preparing a practical Transition Note that captures knowledge and lessons learned to support the transition process.
  • Developing and preparing research papers on MICS innovations in the Middle East and North Africa region.
  • Analyzing and synthesizing data and evidence related to children.
  • Contributing to research on child poverty and multidimensional deprivation.
  • Producing high-quality analytical and research outputs suitable for publication.
  • Working according to the timelines and deliverables specified in the consultancy assignment plan.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in one of the following fields or a related technical discipline:
    • Economics.
    • Demography.
    • Statistics.
    • Epidemiology.
    • Engineering.
    • Or another field with a strong background in measurement, analysis, and quantitative research.
  • Have at least 15 years of experience in data analysis, quantitative research, or related fields.
  • Demonstrate strong experience in household survey methodologies and data analysis.
  • Have experience supporting national data systems, preferably systems and surveys related to children.
  • Have experience with programmes such as MICS or similar survey programmes.
  • Have experience conducting systematic reviews, providing analytical feedback, and reviewing complex research products.
  • Have experience preparing research papers, analytical reports, and research briefs of publishable quality.
  • Previous experience working with UNICEF or other United Nations agencies on issues related to children and the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Experience providing technical support to governments and United Nations Country Teams.
  • Be fluent in English, with excellent writing skills.
  • Knowledge of data contexts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, as well as regional and international partnerships, is considered an additional advantage.
