Opportunity description

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is offering a job opportunity for the position of Security Operations Centre Assistant in Sudan, with duty stations available in Khartoum, Damazin, and Kosti. The position is offered under a National Personnel Service Agreement – NPSA-4 for one year on a full-time basis.

The selected candidate will work within the Security Operations Centre to support the United Nations system in Sudan, particularly in the areas of security communications, monitoring staff and mission movements, receiving emergency reports, tracking security incidents, and managing radio communication equipment and networks. UNDSS also supports United Nations agencies and international and humanitarian organizations in carrying out relief operations safely across different areas of Sudan.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Operate United Nations-approved communication systems, including VHF and HF networks.

  • Receive and transmit messages and calls through radio and telephone systems.

  • Maintain continuous communication with staff, vehicles, and field teams.

  • Track mission movements and inform teams of relevant security issues and risks.

  • Provide the initial response to security emergency communications and incidents.

  • Monitor news and developments around the clock and report security incidents, including those involving United Nations personnel.

  • Accurately record all incoming and outgoing communications and messages.

  • Disseminate security alerts and information to security officers and designated focal points.

  • Ensure that network users comply with radio communication procedures and call sign protocols.

  • Keep staff lists, contact details, and vehicle information up to date.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of security-related information and communications.

  • Monitor the readiness of communication rooms, radio equipment, and communication networks.

  • Report technical faults and support efforts to restore services as quickly as possible.

  • Provide basic technical support for communication equipment in the field.

  • Assist the ICT Officer with equipment installation and setup when required.

  • Train United Nations partners on the use of communication systems when needed.

Eligibility criteria

  • Completion of secondary education.

  • A qualification in Radio Telecommunications is considered an advantage.

  • At least:

    • 4 years of experience in radio communications for candidates with a high school diploma.

    • Or 1 year of experience for candidates holding a bachelor’s degree.

  • Good knowledge of computer applications, the internet, and Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of equipment installation and maintenance is considered an advantage.

  • Previous experience as a Radio Operator, Call Agent, or in a similar role is considered an advantage.

  • Excellent knowledge of Codan VHF and Motorola VHF systems.

  • Knowledge of Selective Calling systems and programming.

  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
