Opportunity description
Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) is hiring a Research Fellow for its College of Islamic Studies in Qatar to contribute to the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) research in theoretical and applied Islamic ethics. Applications are reviewed as they arrive and on a rolling basis until the position is filled; the listed closing date is December 27, 2026.
About the Research Fellow Job
The Research Fellow will contribute to research projects with minimal supervision and provide research, coordination, and operational support for the center’s projects, academic activities, and international initiatives. Research work may include conceptualizing survey methodologies, collecting data, conducting fieldwork and interviews, implementing research activities, analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, writing reports, preparing presentations, and reviewing and revising written work.
The role also involves literature searches and reference collection, applying basic scientific principles to develop research procedures, and supporting policies and procedures intended to meet research quality objectives and accreditation standards. The Fellow will develop and maintain repositories covering defined priority research topics, research records, policies, and related documents. Working with colleagues, the successful applicant will help design and manage databases that support research.
Fieldwork responsibilities include following established protocols and supervising fieldwork and data-collection activities. The Fellow will record information from multiple sources, perform calculations for tables and graphs, and summarize and interpret results for publications and presentations. The position also includes seeking opportunities to publish peer-reviewed papers independently or with other researchers, helping prepare proposals for external funding agencies, and keeping project-progress reports up to date.
Further duties include participating in scientific gatherings and helping organize research events such as seminars and conferences. The Fellow will provide training on relevant research tools to entry-level researchers and support staff, and share protocols and techniques with researchers and graduate students. The role also involves engaging with College of Islamic Studies students and contributing to their research projects.
The successful candidate will support international initiatives, including the International Islamic Bioethics Association (IIBA) and the Global Alliance for AI Ethics (GAAIE), and coordinate with advisory boards, institutional partners, and working groups. Related experience may include preparing concept notes, background papers, policy briefs, executive summaries, governance documents, meeting proceedings, and records of agreed actions. The listed additional skills also cover archival research, close textual and semantic analysis, support for externally funded projects and their compliance and reporting requirements, academic content curation, and familiarity with reference-management software and scholarly databases.
Applications are reviewed immediately on a rolling basis until the role is filled. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews. The successful candidate must be ready to start in Spring 2027.
