Opportunity description

Hektoen International welcomes the participation of health professionals, students, and scholars of the humanities and social sciences in an essay competition. You are invited to participate in the 2021 Hektoen Grand Prix Essay Competition in honor of Hektoen Institute Board Member Mrs. Hella Mannheimer (1924-2020). Topics might include art, history, literature, education, etc. as they relate to medicine. To ensure the receipt of a wide variety of articles, the competition has decided to exclude those dealing with COVID 19 from this contest.

If you win this competition, you will award one of these prizes:

  1. The winner: $5,000.
  2. The runner-up: $2,500.

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following terms:

  1. Submission of an article implies consent to publish in Hektoen International.
  2. The contest is open to participants 18 years or older.
  3. For multiple author articles, only one person should submit the entry and communicate with the editors.
  4. Articles may include images. 
  5. The editors of the journal will recommend submissions and edits for publication and contest judges will read the original submission presented by the author.
  6. The winners of the contest will be announced by email in 2021 and winning articles will be published in a 2021 issue of Hektoen International.
  7. Participants should have copyright ownership and permission to use any images submitted.
  8. Articles must be unpublished, original work that relates medicine to the humanities.
  9. Essays should be under 1,500 words.
