Opportunity description
Bridport is offering a literary competition in Poetry, Flash Fiction, and Short Story. The mission of the Bridport Prize is to encourage emerging writers and promote literary excellence through its writing competition structure.
Poetry:
- Write poems to 42 lines, max.
- You can write about absolutely anything but whatever your rhyme or reason.
- The Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English aged 16 and over at the time of the closing date.
- Entries must not have been published, self-published, published on any website, blog or online forum, broadcast in any other competition.
- In addition to the prize money, the top three poems are automatically entered into the Forward Prize For Poetry’s best single poem competition, with the chance to win a further £1000.
Poetry Prize:
- First prize: £5,000
- Second prize: £1,000
- Third prize: £500
Note: Fees £10 per poem.
Short Story:
- Short story: 5000 words max.
- The Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English aged 16 and over at the time of the closing date (the novel award has different criteria. See the novel page for details).
- Entries must not have been published, self-published, published on any website, blog or online forum, broadcast, have won or been placed (2nd, 3rd, runner up etc) in any other competition.
Short Story Prize:
- First prize: £5,000
- Second prize: £1,000
- Third prize: £500
Note: Fees £12 per short story.
Flash Fiction:
- Flash fiction: 250 words max.
- The Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English aged 16 and over at the time of the closing date (the novel award has different criteria. See the novel page for details).
- Entries must not have been published, self-published, published on any website, blog or online forum, broadcast, have won or been placed (2nd, 3rd, runner up etc) in any other competition.
Flash Fiction Prize:
- First prize: £1,000
- Second prize: £500
- Third prize: £250
Note: Fees £9 per flash fiction.
Format Rules:
- Add the word count to the top right of the first page.
- The title is not included in the word count
- Do not add cover or title pages
- Use any font, 12pt, black
- Double line spaced
- Number the pages in the centre at the bottom of the page
- Save the file as a Microsoft Word document – .doc or .docx.
- They also accept file types .rtf, .pdf, .txt.
- Maximum allowed file size is 2Mb
- The file name should be the title of the story only
- Do not include your name in the file title or it will be disqualified
- Do not put Bridport entry / Bridport story entry etc in the file title
