Opportunity description
SMACH invites artists to be part of the 5th edition of the “SMACH - Constellation of art, culture & history in the Dolomites”, this is a land art project born in 2012. An outdoor biennial exhibition that supports the marriage of art and nature. Every edition features 10 artistic creations assembled in the heart of the Dolomites which are specifically created and adapted to different natural sites.
The call for SMACH’s 5th edition (2021) will select 10 works of art and installations created by individual artists or groups of artists. Their work will be exhibited in historically and culturally relevant locations across Val Badia during the SMACH biennial exhibition during July, August, and September 2021. The selected works aim to spark the interest of visitors in art not only as an autonomous language but also as a means to promote the land. The installations should deliver a vast and strong relation to the history, traditions, architecture, and nature of the selected locations.
Theme:
FRAGILE IS THE THEME FOR THE SMACH 2021. What do frailty and fragility mean in our world? After all, being FRAGILE can mean a lot. Headlines say the current pandemic has shone a light on the fragility of institutions and globalization; while according to the Oxford dictionary, “delicate”, “dainty” and “fine” are synonyms of FRAGILE. The world and peace are FRAGILE – but so are human relations at times.
But fragility contains other values, too: sensitivity and tenderness, friendliness and dignity – all values which open the door to different emotions, feelings, and existences. Why should we talk about fragility? Such a narrative enables us to think about the lighter and darker sides of human existence in the first place, and because at present, we are being unequivocally shown how FRAGILE we, our world, and everything around us is.

The selected locations where the works of art will be installed and exhibited can be reached by walking on the footpaths. All locations are placed between 1,100 and 2,300 m altitude.
