The University of St Andrews and independent exploration and production company ConocoPhillips announce the call for entries for the St Andrews Prize For The Environment 2020. 

About The Prize: 

The primary objective of the Prize is to find innovative solutions to environmental challenges across the world. The solutions should be practical, scalable and able to be replicated in other places, combining good science, economic reality and political acceptability. The Prize offers people from all backgrounds around the world the chance to help transform their environmental ideas into reality and provides a network of connections and support.

Prize Topics: 

Examples of the type of topics applicants might choose to focus on include:

  • Biodiversity.
  • Sustainable development.
  • Urban Regeneration.
  • Recycling.
  • Health and environmental health.
  • Waste, water and sanitation issues.
  • Renewable energy.
  • Wildlife conservation including reducing animal-human conflict.
  • Land use and maintenance.

Eligibility:

Applications are invited from individuals, multi-disciplinary teams or community groups for this annual prize. To enter the Prize the project must meet the prize strict entry criteria. applicant must review the below statements and confirm the project he is submitting is eligible. 

If the project meets ALL the entry criteria, the applicant will be able to proceed to the next stage where he can complete the online entry form. 

The Project: 

  • Is related to sustainable development and aligned with the UN Goals for Sustainable Development.
  • Is related to community progress allied with smart and innovative development and use of the earth’s environmental resources from air, land, and sea.
  • Is replicable from one geographic area to another and ideally be scalable in size.
  • Has a clearly defined need for funding that will make a step change to the project’s aims.
  • Has the ability to inspire others in the field.
  • Contributes to the global pursuit of sustainability in the short to long-term.
  • Is not focused on a special interest group or is exclusive of particular groups in society.
  • Is not a major infrastructure project e.g. construction of a building.
  • Is not a regular/annual event that is not connected to a new initiative.
  • Is not related to political activities, lobbying or religious groups.
  • Is not a project that is designed purely for fundraising purposes.
  • Is not a research project.

Awards: 

Prize of 100,000 USD for the winner and the runner(s)-up will receive 25,000 USD. 

Evaluation: 

Finalists will be asked to attend a seminar at the University of St Andrews in February 2020. Following the presentation of their projects in English to the Trustees and invited delegates at the seminar, the winner will be selected and announced.
