Opportunity description

Are you passionate about music and want to continue to develop your talents while studying for your degree?

Bournemouth University in the UK invites students interested in music to apply for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate scholarship for the academic year 2019-2020. Scholarships are reviewed on a regular basis and the university reserves the right to withdraw, amend or introduce new scholarships at any time, and they are awarded in the first year only unless stated otherwise. There are two types of music scholarships available:

Major award:

  1. You’ll need to have reached Grade 8 of the Associated Board, Trinity or LCM, or equivalent, in your main instrument or voice
  2. You need to show you have an academic grounding in music, and have passed A-level (C or above) in the subject or have obtained Grade 8 theory
  3. In your application, you need to demonstrate how you wish to develop musically, as well as academically. If you are shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an audition and will find out whether you’ve won a scholarship within two week
  4. Your award will not be formally approved until you hold an unconditional firm offer (UF)

Minor award:

  1. The minor awards are available if you narrowly miss out on the prerequisites for a major award - you’ll need to achieve Grade 8 in your first year and will then be eligible for a major award in your second year
  2. You’ll also be expected to contribute to musical life at the university by performing in concerts and participating in at least one university ensemble

Eligibility criteria:

  1. Be liable to pay fees at the UK/EU rate
  2. Have received and accepted an offer of a place on a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course delivered at Bournemouth University
  3. Be a talented instrumentalist or vocalist wishing to continue to develop musically as well as academically. You must be able to demonstrate that you are a talented musician or vocalist and that you have been involved in ensemble activity

Scholarship amount:

The university offers £1,150 (major award) or £450 (minor award). Some of the money you’re awarded will go towards regular music lessons for your main instrument or voice with one of the university’s tutors, but you can use the remainder to see your favorite artists in concert, buy new music for your collection or even to pick up a new outfit to wear on stage - whatever fuels your musical passion.
