Opportunity description

The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) invites talented secondary school students across Africa to apply for the workshops that will be held in three locations between late July and August: Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.

The YYAS program, the flagship program of the Yale Africa and supported by Higherlife Foundation _ aims to introduce secondary school students to the demanding university and financial aid application processes and requirements, as well as to make higher education more accessible to Africa’s most talented student leaders. Last year, YYAS brought together 294 secondary school students from 256 schools and 38 African nations.

Program Details

  • YYAS participants will attend lectures led by prominent Yale faculty as well as seminars developed and taught by Yale graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Participants will also engage in several experiential activities focusing on leadership and teambuilding and have a chance to interact directly with admissions officers from North American, African, and European universities.
  • YYAS offers daily workshops on different components of the university application process, such as how to craft a personal essay.
  • Students will receive both individual and group lessons for standardized tests, designed specifically for African test-takers new to exams like the SAT.
  • By the end of the program, students will have a plan and timeline for submitting their applications, as well as abundant resources for further research and mentorship.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants MUST fulfill all of the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be at least 14 years old and no more than 18 years old by the application deadline in order to be considered.
  • The applicant must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
  • The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. YYAS will also accept applications from refugees living in an African country.
  • The applicant must currently attend school in an African country.
  • If the applicant attends school in the Northern Hemisphere, he must be graduating secondary school by the earliest May/June 2022. If he attends school in the Southern Hemisphere, he must be graduating secondary school by the earliest November/December 2021.
  • Students who will graduate secondary school before August 2021 are NOT eligible to apply.

Note: A limited number of travel grants are available for students from low-income backgrounds who demonstrate the need for financial assistance to offset the costs of airfare between African countries.
