Opportunity description
As part of the international awards and competitions in drawing, illustration, and children’s book design, Spanish publishing house Apila Ediciones is now accepting entries for Apila’s First Printing Award 2027, an international competition aimed at illustrators from around the world seeking to publish their first professional illustrated children’s book.
The award is organized in collaboration with the Aragón School of Design and with the support of the Zaragoza City Council. It aims to discover new talent in drawing and illustration and give the winner an opportunity to enter the world of professional publishing.
Applicants may submit an illustrated children’s book project written in Spanish or English, either as an original story or an adaptation of a work that has entered the public domain and is free from copyright restrictions.
Benefits
The winning project will receive:
€4,000, equivalent to 10% of the value of the book’s first print run.
A professional publishing contract with Apila Ediciones.
Professional publication of the winning book.
International distribution of the book.
Support in bringing the project into the children’s book market and the professional publishing industry.
Eligibility criteria
The competition is open to illustrators of all nationalities.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
The illustrator must not have had an illustrated children’s book published with an ISBN before June 30, 2026.
Self-published works are permitted subject to the conditions established by the competition.
For joint projects involving a writer and an illustrator, the requirement regarding no previously published book applies only to the illustrator.
The project must be in English or Spanish.
Applicants may submit an original story or an adaptation of a work that is free from copyright restrictions.
All rights to the submitted project must be available and not subject to third-party rights.
The use of generative AI tools in the illustrations is not permitted.
