Opportunity description

The Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond) is accepting applications for funded art residencies in Seoul, New York and Nuuk in 2027 and early 2028. The programme is for visual artists, curators and art mediators who work professionally with contemporary art and have a significant connection to the Danish art scene. The deadline is 1 January 2027 at 14:00, and the date is currently provisional.

About the Art Residencies in Seoul, New York and Nuuk

The Foundation's Project Support Committee for Visual Arts has agreed special arrangements with three international residencies. Applicants may apply for a maximum of two of the three in each application round. Residents deepen and develop their practice, promote their work and build an international network.

MMCA Seoul, Changdong

Artists and curators can apply for a four-month residency in 2027. Two places are offered: 1 March to 30 June 2027 and 1 August to 30 November 2027. A studio and an apartment suitable for one person are provided, so duos and groups must arrange other housing themselves.

ISCP New York

Visual artists, curators and art mediators can apply for a stay of 1 to 12 months between 1 May 2027 and 30 April 2028. Applicants state their preferred period and the committee tries to accommodate it. One studio is provided and residents find their own housing in New York. ISCP has no workshop facilities for materials such as wood, metal or fabric, so artists must find other workshops in the city.

Nuuk Kunstmuseum

Two places of two months each are offered in 2027: 1 March to 30 April and 1 August to 30 September. The stay includes an apartment in Nuuk and studio and/or office space. A new partnership with Narsaq Research Station offers candidates a 14-day stay in Narsaq, with travel and accommodation costs covered by the fund. The residency is mainly research-oriented, requires no specific output such as an artwork, exhibition, talk or article, and the facilities are not suited to large or physically demanding projects.

The museum prioritises applicants who work with historical narratives, colonialism or universal human themes, whose proposals have local relevance, challenge stereotypes and do not aim to study the Greenlandic people or their culture, and who want to collaborate with local partners such as museums and institutions. Speaking to former residents of Nuuk before applying is recommended.

Selection and Timeline

For Nuuk and MMCA, the committee shortlists 5 to 10 applicants and the host residency makes the final selection. For ISCP, the committee makes the final decision. Applicants receive an answer no later than 12 weeks after the deadline, and the awards are published on the Foundation's website. The committee assesses professional practice and artistic quality, the match between the applicant and the chosen residency, and the plans, projects or collaborations in view. Applicants are also encouraged to consider green sustainability, for example the mode and length of travel.

Who Should Apply

This residency suits professional visual artists, curators and art mediators with a clear practice and a reason to work in Seoul, New York or Nuuk.
