Opportunity description

Wilbur and Niso Smith Foundation announce an author of tomorrow's competition for young with the opportunity to win £100. The author of tomorrow award is designed to find the adventure writers of the future. It's part of the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize, it is an annual competition open to young people across the world who have completed a short piece of adventure writing in English.

Benefits

Prizes for this competition are awarded in three categories:

  1. The first category is for participants who are 11 years old or less and whose writings are 500 words in length. The prize in this category is £100, plus £150 book tokens for your school.
  2. The second category is for participants between the ages of 12 and 15 years and whose writings are between 1,500 and 5,000 words in length. The prize in this category is £100, plus £150 book tokens for your school.
  3. The third category is for participants between the ages of 16 and 21 whose writings are between 1,500 and 5,000 words in length. The award value in this category is £1,000.
  4. Each shortlisted author will also have their work digitally published by the partners at the global literacy charity, Worldreader.

Eligibility criteria

  • The competition is open to writers of any nationality writing in English.
  • Stories entered must be in English and within the word count specified for the category being entered into.
  • Stories entered must not have won another competition or have been published outside of your academic institution. You must notify the competition if your story is published outside of your academic institution, or if you are shortlisted or win another competition with it, prior to the date that the shortlist is announced.
  • You may submit multiple entries. Each entry must be submitted separately and will be considered a separate entry.
  • Entries must be submitted digitally, as a word .doc or .docx. Please contact charlotte@wilbur-niso-smithfoundation.org if you have any questions about the file type.
  • There must be no reference to the author's name or personal details in the manuscript. This is to ensure that the judges do not know the names of the authors of the entries they are reading.
  • If your entry is shortlisted it will be published in an anthology made available on the Worldreader platform. By entering the competition, you agree to your story being published by Worldreader in this way. The anthology will be online and available free of charge for readers anywhere. The author still owns the story.
  • The competition cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury, or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the competition. 

The competition reserves the right:

  • To not award some or all of the prizes, where circumstances are beyond the competition's control, or if the judges' overall verdict is that the level of entries is not up to the required standard. 
  • To disqualify any entry if it has reasonable grounds to believe that the entry does not comply with these Terms & Conditions. 
  • To amend these Terms & Conditions where it is deemed necessary to do.
